Synopsis
After his father's death, a son turns to the objects, routines, acts of labour and remembered promises that continue to hold a family's history. At the centre is the gold jar, an object through which grief, migration, distance and return can be examined without reducing them to sentiment. As memory is tested against verified events, the narrative asks what a child may understand too late, what a parent communicates through work rather than words, and how a promise changes when the person to whom it was made is no longer present. A Promise of a Son to the Gold Jar is a literary narrative nonfiction work about inheritance, absence and the difficult work of carrying love forward.
